German Customs Seize 115,800 Untaxed E-Cigarettes in Magdeburg

German customs officers in Magdeburg seized 115,800 untaxed, unapproved e-cigarettes and 4.37 million milliliters of liquid during August and September. The recovery is valued at nearly 1.4 million euros in lost tax, and criminal proceedings were opened against four truck drivers for commercial tax evasion and tobacco-law violations.

German customs authorities have reported a large seizure of untaxed e-cigarettes from a coordinated series of stops in and around Magdeburg, the operation being one of the more sizable enforcement results the agency has recorded on the vape trade.

Between August and September, officers at the Magdeburg customs post seized 115,800 e-cigarette devices that carried no excise duty and had not received approval for sale on the market. Alongside the devices, they took 4.37 million milliliters of e-liquid.

The tax authority values the interception at nearly 1.4 million euros in lost revenue that the seizure prevented. The figure is built around the excise that would have been due on the goods had they entered the retail channel, which is why the agency frames it as recovered tax rather than the retail price of the stock.

The case has moved into prosecution. Criminal proceedings were opened against four truck drivers, with the charges covering commercial tax evasion and violations of the tobacco law. The involvement of the drivers indicates the stock was in transit rather than already warehoused for sale, and points to a supply route that the customs post had been tracking.

The seizure lands at a time when EU member states are tightening the enforcement of excise and product-approval rules on e-cigarettes, and when customs posts are increasingly treating the vape trade as a priority line of recovery.
